Coil removal - £125
Routine coil removal is a simple and quick procedure with minimal risk of complications. Both the consultation and the removal are typically completed in a single appointment, provided it is safe to proceed.
Copper (non-hormonal) Coil Fitting With/Without Replacement - £350
Copper coil fitting is a safe and effective long-term contraceptive option. The procedure involves placing a small, hormone-free copper device in the uterus to prevent pregnancy. It’s typically quick, performed by a trained professional, and can provide protection for up to 10 years.
Hormonal (Mirena/Benlexa) Coil Fitting With/Without Replacement -£400
Hormonal coil implants, also known as LNG-IUDs, are small T-shaped devices inserted into the uterus that release progestogen to prevent pregnancy. They are over 99% effective and provide long-term contraception for 3 to 8 years. In addition to preventing pregnancy, they can lighten or stop periods, making them a great option for those with heavy or painful periods.
Implant Fitting/Replacement - £300
The implant is a small, 4cm-long plastic tube that is placed under the skin in your upper arm. Fitting or replacing a contraceptive implant is a quick and straightforward procedure that typically takes just a few minutes, with minimal risk of complications and no need for stitches.
Implant removal - £175
This procedure is suitable for those requiring a routine implant removal, where both ends of the implant are easily felt and no prior removal attempts have been made. If previous attempts have been made, we would not recommend this being performed without the use of specialist equipment.
Coil Check - £125
Coil checks are important for confirming that your coil (IUD or IUS) is properly positioned and that your body is adjusting well to it. They are typically recommended if you experience any discomfort or have concerns.
Contraceptive injection - £70
The contraceptive injection (Depo-Provera, Sayana Press, or Noristerat) is a method of preventing pregnancy. When used consistently, the injection is 99% effective, meaning that 1 in 100 people who use it may become pregnant within a year.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is a contraceptive implant?
How does it work:
The contraceptive implant consists of one or two small, flexible plastic rods, each about 4cm in length, placed just under the skin of your upper arm. It provides protection against pregnancy for up to three years.
The implant works by gradually releasing a hormone called progestin into your bloodstream. This hormone prevents the release of eggs from the ovaries each month and also thickens cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to reach the uterus.
Getting the Implant:
The procedure to insert the implant is quick and straightforward, typically taking around five minutes. A trained professional will place the implant just under the skin of your upper arm. Your arm will be numbed beforehand, so the process is generally painless. Once in place, the implant stays securely under the skin, although it may shift slightly from the insertion site. This slight movement won’t affect its effectiveness, and removal remains simple. You’ll be able to feel the implant beneath your skin.
For the first few days after insertion, try to keep the area clean and dry. You can cover your arm with cling film while showering to protect the site. There will be a small wound where the implant was inserted.
Effectiveness of the Implant:
The implant is the most effective contraceptive method, providing excellent protection against pregnancy.
With perfect use, the implant is over 99% effective.
Less than 1 in 100 people using the implant will become pregnant within a year.
How soon does the implant start working?
If the implant is inserted within the first five days of your menstrual cycle, you’ll be immediately protected from pregnancy. If it’s inserted on any other day of your cycle, you’ll need to use additional contraception, like condoms, for the first seven days.
What is a non-hormonal coil (CU-IUD) ?
The non-hormonal coil (CU-IUD)
The non-hormonal coil (also known as the “copper coil”, “copper T” or “loop”) is a small T-shaped plastic and copper device that is fitted in the uterus (womb). It provides contraceptive protection for up to ten years.
The copper stops the sperm and egg from surviving inside the uterus and fallopian tubes, so sperm cannot fertilise an egg.
Getting the Non-Hormonal Coil Fitted:
The procedure to insert the non-hormonal coil is quick and straightforward, usually taking around five minutes. A trained professional will insert the coil through the vagina, and it will be positioned securely in the uterus, where it stays in place.
The coil has attached threads that extend into the vagina, making it easier to remove and allowing both you and your healthcare provider to check that the coil is correctly positioned.
It’s uncommon for the coil to move or fall out. Most people can check for the threads themselves, as they are small and thin, extending from the cervix into the vagina. When the coil is inserted, your healthcare provider will show you how to locate the threads so you can confidently check for them yourself.
Effectiveness of the Non-Hormonal Coil
The non-hormonal coil is highly effective at preventing pregnancy.
With an effectiveness rate of over 99%, fewer than 1 in 100 people using the coil will become pregnant in a year, depending on the specific type of coil used.
The non-hormonal coil is also the most reliable option for emergency contraception. It can be inserted up to 120 hours (five days) after unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy.
How quickly does the non-hormonal coil work?
The non-hormonal coil provides immediate protection against pregnancy as soon as it is inserted.
What is a hormonal coil (LNG-IUD)?
The Hormonal Coil (LNG-IUD)
The hormonal coil, also known by brand names like Mirena and previously referred to as the IUS, is a small, T-shaped plastic device placed inside the uterus (womb). It provides reliable contraception for up to eight years.
The device releases a low, steady dose of the hormone progestogen, which thickens cervical mucus to block sperm from reaching an egg. It also thins the uterine lining, making it unsuitable for a fertilised egg to implant.
Getting the Hormonal Coil Fitted
Inserting a hormonal coil is a quick and straightforward procedure, taking about five minutes. A healthcare professional will place the coil through the vagina and into the uterus, where it stays securely in position.
The coil has thin threads that extend into the vagina, which help with removal and allow you or your provider to check that it’s properly placed.
It’s rare for the coil to move or fall out. Most people can feel the small, soft threads by self-checking. Your healthcare provider will guide you on how to locate the threads so you feel confident checking them on your own.
How Does the Hormonal Coil Affect Hormones?
While the hormonal coil releases progestogen, its effects are localised to the uterus, meaning you’re less likely to experience the systemic side effects often associated with combined contraceptive methods like the pill, patch, or ring.
Different hormonal coil types contain varying hormone levels. For example, the Mirena and Levosert coils release higher doses than the Kyleena coil.
How Does the Hormonal Coil Affect Periods?
Unlike the non-hormonal copper coil, which can worsen heavy or painful periods, the hormonal coil may actually reduce heavy bleeding. It is often recommended as a treatment option for people with heavy periods.
Effectiveness of the Hormonal Coil
The hormonal coil is highly effective, with a success rate of over 99%. Fewer than 1 in 100 users will become pregnant over its lifespan, which ranges from 3 to 8 years depending on the type of coil.
How Quickly Does the Hormonal Coil Work?
If the hormonal coil is inserted during the first five days of your menstrual cycle, it provides immediate protection against pregnancy. If inserted on any other day, you’ll need to use additional contraception, such as condoms, for the first seven days.
